At the age of 500, modern and dynamic are the words used to describe Panama City today. The city has expanded in every direction – even south into the Bay. Its modernity and urbanization highlights and masks numerous challenges, all of which are characteristics of an emerging, modern and sustainable city. Panama’s growth has been rapid and at times haphazard, yet, its path to urban sustainability have not gone unnoticed.

Thanks to the Inter-Development Bank’s campaign to promote Emerging and Sustainable Cities in Latin America- Panama quickly joined the 55 countries movement, transforming public spaces into walking areas.

Panama’s geography will continue to play an important role in connecting people in the region through highways, trains, waterways and airports, seeking to remain a regional leader in smart cities.

Did you know Panama is home to Central America’s first metro subway?

So how will Panama continue support regional planning and appropriate architecture to maintain a balanced and sustainable development for the long term?
